What Does It Take To Be A Camp Counselor?

The Counselor in Training (CIT) program is a two-week camp for kids ages 16-17 where campers interested in becoming camp counselors learn the ins and outs of camp. Their first week is an onsite team development program where the CITs will be trained by experienced Sky-Y counselors on working with youth and especially campers. After week one, CITs will work as volunteer counselors for their second week with additional trainings in the evenings. The CIT experience creates friendships and bonds that last a lifetime and truly helps the campers grow and be ready to take on the tasks of summer camp counselors.

The focus of the program is to learn to lead, motivate, and teach campers about the important role camp plays in their lives, as well as to teach them lifelong activities such as canoeing, fishing, and even help them learn to ride a horse. CIT’s will learn/lead camp songs, games, skits, and camp activities; and the importance of implementing the core values of the YMCA into the camper’s camp experience.

CIT’s will have the opportunity to shadow senior staff and counselors and to assist them with daily programming, as well as to begin to utilize what they have learned during the program.
