Arizona YMCA Camp Sky-Y & Chauncey Ranch History
The Valley of the Sun YMCA is proud to recognize that we have offered YMCA Camping for Arizona Youth since the 1920s. The early days were very rustic but the ideals were the same as today: getting kids out of the city and into the wilderness to learn about nature, become more self-sufficient and independent, meet new friends and interact with good adult role models.
Based on Christian principles, today’s YMCA stresses the four core values of Respect, Responsibility, Honesty and Caring. We use these values in our staff training and planning, as well as in our daily camping program. Campers are encouraged to practice these principles throughout the week in very tangible ways. Following are some of the ways we incorporate these values: Morning Chapel sets the tone for the day; the daily themes are Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Honesty and Friendship. Kids participate by leading songs, readings and skits.
The Rag & Leather program is another traditional YMCA program. In this program, a camper makes a commitment to change or improve a part of their life over the next year. As a reminder, the camper “accepts” the challenge of a Rag (bandana) and takes part in a special ceremony that assists them in remembering their challenge. The Rag is an outward symbol of an inward goal.
Vespers or Cabin Chats at night help the counselors focus the kids on the positive things that happened during the day and look forward to the next days’ excitement. In addition, the daily life at Camp stresses the values in how we treat each other in deeds and actions.
